$1.52 trillion in national student loan debt. 44.2 million people drowning in it. Something here isn’t right. Higher education needs some skin in the game.
I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to be able to do amazing things. As a young adult, I was a musician who managed to get herself and her music on local radio at a time where FM radio was still a big deal. I completed programs at the fire academy, earned a degree in HR, landed an amazing job before graduating uni as a branch manager in the banking industry, and lived overseas after graduation where I learned about the realities of the world we live in.
Throughout it all, I kept experiencing the same feeling after accomplishment. I was grateful, but I was also dissatisfied. After a certain amount of time the learning slowed down, and with it, the excitement. Once in a while I would get these amazing ideas for projects and revolutionary businesses, some of which I see as unicorns in SV today, but I needed something. A skill I knew I could attain, but as an devote Dave Ramsey follower, and someone who believes in living debt free, did not want to take out student loans to learn, so I joined Lambda School.
I want to be clear in stating that I was already dabbling in code before applying. Programming takes a lot of time and dedication, so it’s a good thing I enjoy it. The learning never stops. Technology continues to grow, and it doesn’t slow down. There is always that feeling of “what am I going to learn next” or “we could use this application to” or “we can build this to solve this problem”, and the list on. It doesn’t stop. It is continuous improvement in both machine and human. It is future.

With a business model that can take the country out of this crisis should all schools adopt it, Lambda School is paving the path toward what higher education should be. In essence, they invest in their students and do not earn a dime until that student lands a job in the field Lambda taught them at a salary of at least $50,000 or more. Needless to say, the medium salary for software engineers and data scientists are a lot higher than this. The ISA, Income Share Agreement, students sign with Lambda is 17% for two years or until $30,000 of total payment. Whichever comes first. Without catches, or hidden fees, or them even forcing you to work in the industry if you feel as though it wasn’t for you.
I recently finished the full stack portion of the curriculum and am paying it forward as a contracted Team Lead for incoming students. Thus far, joining Lambda has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life and for my future. I have always yearned to be with ethical companies and to be with ethical company, and the school, it’s CEO, and it’s investors are an embodiment of the word. They are very intentional in changing lives for the better and it shows.
